The *subshell* exits. But this does not force its "declaring" parent
script to exit.


Also note this difference:

set -e ; declare a=$(         false; echo something ); echo $a
  => "something"
set -e ; declare a=$( set -e; false; echo something ); echo $a
  => <nothing>
