I've attached the latest version of the direxpand patch, and an additional
patch (direxpand-relpath) that is the first cut at avoiding expansion of
relative pathnames in situations where it's `safe'.  It doesn't currently
expand paths beginning with `.', even when they might potentially be
changed by canonicalization.  I'm not particularly fond of that, but it's
what bash-4.1 did, so we'll go with it for now.

Please let me know how the relpath patch works for you.
