Actually, shortening /// to / is okay (it's only // that must not
unconditionally be shortened to /, due to POSIX specification and Cygwin
behavior of //), so a modified version would be:

case $HOME in
  *[^/]* ) HOME=${HOME%${HOME##*[^/]}} ;;
  / | // ) ;;
  *) HOME=/ ;;
esac
