Hello, I would like to send two patches and raise two suggestions
which are related to two `keyseq' types.

Description:

  In bash-4.3.43, bash-4.4.12, and the latest commit of the devel
branch, `bind -x' does not work for key sequences containing `\C-@'.

Repeat-By:

  First setup the following key binding.

    $ bash-4.4 --norc
    $ bind -x '"\C-@": echo hello'
    $

  Then type C-@ (or C-space), and we will have the following message.

    bash-4.4: bash_execute_unix_command: cannot find keymap for command
    $

  Until bash-4.2, the key binding have worked correctly as follows.

    hello
    $

Fix:

  The error message is raised for the failure of retrieving command
strings from `cmd_xmap' in the function `bash_execute_unix_command' at
the line 4105 in `bashline.c' (devel branch):

      cmd = (char *)rl_function_of_keyseq (rl_executing_keyseq,
cmd_xmap, &type);

  The problem seems to be caused by the design of the function
`rl_function_of_keyseq' defined at the line 764 in
`lib/readline/bind.c' (devel branch). There are two types of key
sequence representation: one is what I call here the `untranslated
keyseq' which can contain backslash sequences such as `\C-@'
(equivalent to `\0'), and the other is the `translated keyseq' which
can be obtained by passing the untranslated keyseq to the function
`rl_translate_keyseq'. If a function accepts translated keyseqs as
arguments, it should also accept the length argument since otherwise
it is impossible to identify the correct end of the translated keyseqs
which can contain null characters. Note that the function
`rl_translate_keyseq' returns the length, as well as the translated
keyseqs, through the output parameter `int *len'. However, the
function `rl_function_of_keyseq' only accepts `translated keyseq'.

  In the first patch I attached,
`0001-fix-a-bug-that-bind-x-C-unix-command-does-not-work.patch', I
added a new function which accepts the translated keyseq and its
length as arguments. Here I kept the signature and the behavior of
`rl_function_of_keyseq' as it appears to be a part of public interface
of Readline library (Maybe the library interface should also be
changed in some way). Note: The attached patch files are made for the
devel branch (and similar fixes worked for bash-4.4 though I have not
checked with bash-4.3).

  --------

  Actually there are several other similar problems. The second patch
I attached, `0002-fix-interpretation-of-key-sequences.patch', is for
the following problems.

  The function `rl_bind_keyseq_if_unbound_in_map' defined at the line
287 in `lib/readline/bind.c' (devel branch) passes its argument
`keyseq' to two functions `rl_function_of_keyseq' and
`rl_bind_keyseq_in_map'. However, the first one
`rl_function_of_keyseq' accepts translated sequences while the second
one `rl_bind_keyseq_in_map' accepts untranslated sequences. To resolve
this inconsistency without changing the parameters of
`rl_bind_keyseq_if_unbound', `rl_bind_keyseq_if_unbound' should accept
untranslated sequences.

  The functions `rl_bind_key_if_unbound_in_map' and
`rl_bind_key_if_unbound' accept an argument `key' and construct some
null-terminated keyseq to pass it to
`rl_bind_keyseq_if_unbound_in_map'. Here if one passes `CTRL('@')' to
these functions, empty strings will be passed to
`rl_bind_keyseq_if_unbound_in_map`. Here `rl_untranslate_keyseq'
should be used to construct an unstranslated keyseq which can
correctly represent `\C-@'.

  --------

  In the function `bind_termcap_arrow_keys' defined at the line 582 in
`lib/readline/terminal.c' (devel branch), `rl_bind_keyseq_if_unbound'
which accepts untranslated sequences are called with translated
sequences such as `_rl_term_ku', `_rl_term_kd', etc. To correct this,
there can be at least two strategies: (a) define a function to
untranslate translated keyseqs into untranslated keyseqs and
untranslate `_rl_term_ku', etc. before passing it to
`rl_bind_keyseq_if_unbound', or (b) define functions, alternative to
`rl_bind_keyseq_if_unbound', which accepts translated sequences and
its length as arguments and use it. For the strategy (b), we need to
also define the translated-keyseq versions of
`rl_bind_keyseq_if_unbound_in_map', `rl_bind_keyseq_in_map', and
`rl_generic_bind' since the implementation of
`rl_bind_keyseq_if_unbound' relies on these functions.

  I did not make patch for this because I felt that discussion is
needed to decide which strategy is better (or possibly there are other
strategies to fix this).

  --------

  In the documentation which can be found, for example, at
https://tiswww.case.edu/php/chet/readline/readline.html, there is no
distinction between the translated keyseqs and the untranslated
keyseqs. However, in fact, each ``keyseq'' appearing in the documents
should be one of translated keyseq and untranslated keyseq. Apparently
the confusion coming from this ambiguity caused the problems above. I
believe in the documentation it should be clarified that which of the
two keyseq types each ``keyseq'' represents, or a new terminology
(something like `keys' for translated keyseqs contrast to `keyseq' for
untranslated keyseqs) should be introduced to distinguish the two
types of keyseqs.
