They don't, though.

    % bash -xc 'echo "$BASH_VERSION"'
    + echo '5.1.8(1)-release'
    5.1.8(1)-release
    % bash -xvc 'echo "$BASH_VERSION"'
    echo "$BASH_VERSION"
    + echo '5.1.8(1)-release'
    5.1.8(1)-release
