Junk at the end on history

$ history
works fine if I pipe it into tail.
But if I just let it pour out on the screen, I get this junk after it
sitting at the prompt:
9997 Tue, 04 Apr 2023 17:31:36 +0800 history
9998 Tue, 04 Apr 2023 17:31:59 +0800 history |tail
9999 Tue, 04 Apr 2023 17:32:06 +0800 history
