I have an update on this issue that might be of interest to you:

I have looked into the source package from suse,
Taking the 9.1 source package from i386
ftp://ftp.suse.com:/pub/suse/i386/9.1/suse/src/binutils-2.15.90.0.1.1-31
.src.rpm and extracting the original unpatched source tarball from it
(d0427772ccbe68eefd40995d26ca4a78 binutils-2.15.90.0.1.1.tar.bz2) built
an ld that does not have any problems linking.

So it looks like a problem that has sneaked into the cvs head.

Thanks again,
Mike

James,

Thanks for taking the time to answer.
To answer your questions, The error occurred using the same object files
and with just replacing the linker.

Thanks, I will consult with him directly since he is the intel contact
person for binutils.

Thanks again,
Mike
