Hi Brian,

  I could not reproduce this failure.  I am using commit 55bcecd, which is a
bit later than 7a81a73, but as far as I can see there have not been any changes
to readelf between these two points.

  There is a test at line 10182 in readelf.c which is meant to prevent a bad
fetch from happening at line 10189, so I am at a little bit of a loss as to
what is happening.  Maybe the problem is related to building with clang ? 
Could you try using gcc and see if the problem persists ?
