These both are handled without trouble:
...
$ gcc hello.c -ggdb3 
$ ~/binutils/build/binutils/readelf -w a.out > READELF
$ gcc hello.c -gsplit-dwarf
$ ~/binutils/build/binutils/readelf -w a.out > READELF
...

But both combined:
...
$ gcc hello.c -ggdb3 -gsplit-dwarf
$ readelf -w a.out > READELF
