The original command (in comment 0) has -Wl,--no-keep-memory
-Wl,--reduce-memory-overheads, and it exhausted memory _with_ those.

man ld does not mention needing -z for these.

comment 3 makes it sound like -Wl,--no-keep-memory actually breaks it. We had
some problems in the past with this combination, like PR29939..
