' from cvs serverning: unrecognized response `ok

I am using Windows NT 4 Wkstation and downloaded precompiled binaries for NT 
(1.10.5 client).  
The CVS Server (1.11) is residing on a Linux box on the network.  
Environment:
        CVSROOT=:ext:admin@cvs-server:/usr/local/CVSROOT

On a cmd shell, i execute:
        cvs checkout -c

The response is:
        ' from cvs serverning: unrecognized response `ok

Whereupon, it hangs, until i hit ctrl-c, then it says:
        cvs [checkout aborted]: received interrupt signal


I noticed that others have posted this problem in mailing lists, but no one has 
replied with a solution.

Any suggestions are welcome.  Thanks.
