If you want to download a significant amount of source, use anonymous CVS.
The directory containing CVS is known as ccvs so to get all the sources
you would run:

cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs@cvs.cvshome.org:/cvsroot co ccvs

If you're running a very old version of CVS you might have to login first
using an empty password:

cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs@cvs.cvshome.org:/cvsroot login

$ cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs@cvs.cvshome.org:/cvsroot co ccvs
cvs checkout: authorization failed: server cvs.cvshome.org rejected access
to /cvsroot for user anoncvs
cvs checkout: used empty password; try "cvs login" with a real password

My cvs is not "very old" because it actually tried to check out instead of
asking me to log in.

I don't think so.  The site has just been updated.  Something must have
gone wrong.  Actually, I don't think that the Open Source Definition
(http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition_plain.html) requires
development versions to be available for free.
