I agree.  I think the "problem" is that very few of the standard
utilities have "required options", if you'll forgive the oxymoron, and
none of those that do have consistent syntaxes, so the multiple line
method actually works best for them and thus the more general problem
isn't addressed.  That leads people to make up their own conventions
causing inconsistency and, perhaps, confusion.
