Hi Folks,

It seems that the server has problems communicating that it is
unable to allocate bytes... any suggestions on how this error
should be handled cleanly?

It's possible that xmalloc could bypass the buffer to print errors directly to stderr or the network pipe, as appropriate. Alternately, it's possible the buffer routines could be rewritten to avoid allocating new memory, or at least to usually have some cached space large enough for short messages.

I'm not sure how invasive either solution would be.

I used to think people were crazy to get tatoos. Nowadays, I envy
them that clarity of thought. There was at least one point in their lives
when they thought they knew what they were doing. They could walk into a
tatoo parlor and say, "I want a big old pig, in red and black, with flames
shooting out of its nose! And I want it right there! That's who I am!"
