Actually, I'd seen the report about the phantom diffs before. There are only three active developers working on CVS at the moment and until fairly recently, there were only two. We all have other things we work on too. You were just the first person to send a patch. The same might be true of some of the other problems you report and I'm still not convinced that all of them are problems.

Whinge all you want, patches get things done.  :)
