Anyone else have an opinion on or want to handle this? I haven't dealt with SOCKS in 6 years and my knowledge was pretty peripheral back then.

It was considered and rejected years ago, just about the time I became a
developer. I had added SOCKS 4/5 detection to configure and
corresponding code to CVS. Jim Kingdon talked me out of committing it
since there were existing tools (runsocks and SocksCap) that allowed
unmodified clients to run through a SOCKS server. See the Networking
and Security info page (in fact, my original SOCKS 4 patch is still
there): <http://www.cvshome.org/docs/infonetsecurity.html>.

Sounds like a good argument to me. Thanks, Larry.
