Great effort was put into having the enabling of PAM support made explicit. What's the difference between that and kerberos? I would say that kerberos is much more peripheral feature.
Kerberos is fairly common in large corporations and institutions and the extra code added to the CVS executable is minimal.
In any case, in my mind, the only reason PAM needs to be made explicit at the moment is that it is still experimental. Once we have enough positive feedback, I won't mind seeing an autodetect system similar to what is in place for GSSAPI at the moment.
