We've been removing those sort of constructs from CVS as part of the
move away from K&R support.  IIRC, I was told that typecasts to and from
(void *) were necessary on some really old systems, but that I could be
confident that we wouldn't encounter any C89 systems that required it. 
Perhaps this is simply legacy code related to the __ptr_t stuff and
could be removed as well?

This isn't true, it is referenced by the CONVERT_DIRENT_DIRENT64 macro,
which is called later.  The macro was redefined elsewhere though - this
was a copy and paste error.  I've deleted it from this location.

Done.  There is still one intervening bit I had to leave between the
includes of config.h and glob.h.  I turned it:

To make it more obvious to the libc folks that we didn't need this
anymore since I wasn't sure if they did.  I wouldn't be surprised if it
can be cut completely.

I also ran into a really strange interaction.  For some reason, once the
glob.h include was moved up, compiling glob.c started breaking
compilation with complaints of syntax errors in the system stddef.h as
included from glob.h.  I ended up having to move the #include of
<stddef.h> above the __BEGIN_DECLS line to get rid of that message. 
Then I started getting a syntax error on one of glob.h's typedef lines. 
Sticking an include of <sys/types.h> next to the #include <stddef.h>
fixed that, but I'm not really sure why.

Because the function now decides if its argument is a dir rather than
just a link that points to something.  This was part of the bug I had to
fix.  Quoting from my last email:

Yeah, I removed an "if" header before that block of code but I hadn't
decided to reindent it yet since I thought it would make it easier to
tell what I had changed in a behaviorally meaningful way during the bug
fix.  I can reindent it if you like.
