There are plusses and minuses to both approaches and I don't have any
strong preference for one over the other as the ultimate solution to the
problem. My goal is just to get *some* fix for this serious oversight
implemented as soon as possible and directory-at-a-time locking should
be significantly simpler than whole tree.
