Actually, dotest_lit is older than that, possibly as old as 1.7
something, but there don't seem to be any tags for those releases, so I
can't tell for sure. dotest_lit was created because the regular dotest
was failing on at least one platform with "expr: arg list too long".
Alas, I no longer remember which platform, but there's a fair chance it
was AT&T SysV/386, which is probably throughly defunct by now.
