problems with CVS, solaris

Ive been on the website ... not much there,
I hope there are some people on this list.
Ive been having a problem setting up CVS on solaris and have been 
pulling hair trying to get it to work.

To start out with, I followed the steps for installing CVS, and created 
a repository, but when i try to login i get this:

bash-3.00$ echo $CVSROOT
:pserver:chris@localhost:2401/export/CVS
bash-3.00$ cvs login
Logging in to :pserver:chris@localhost:2401/export/CVS
CVS password:
cvs [login aborted]: unrecognized auth response from localhost: Unknown 
command: `'


im running this on a sunfire v480 Sparc server, with a fresh install of 
Solaris 10 on it.

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.
