Thanks for the report.  This does look like it may be unrelated to
the fileutils.  I've just tried running ls in a directory with 10000 files
on a linux-2.4.4 kernel.  No problem.

You should probably try the latest release (4.1) of the fileutils.
There were 9 test releases after your 4.0.36.
