Thanks for the report.
A lot has changed since fileutils-4.0p.
Would you please see if you can reproduce the problem using
the version of ls from fileutils-4.1.9?

I couldn't reproduce the problem using these commands, and
starting in an empty directory on an ext3 file system and running
linux-2.4.18:
seq 80000|xargs touch
ls --color=tty
If you *can* reproduce the failure, please send me
the list of file names and their types.
