Editor-support or not, I find the self-contained AWK scripts to be 
prettier and less
fiddly than the ones wrapped in bash.

PS: I use Emacs with evil-mode (vim emulation) and regularly switch 
between the two,
so you don't have to worry about starting an editor war, I'm neutral.
