mouse scroll wheel causes emacs to crash

In GNU Emacs 20.3.1 (sparc-sun-solaris2.5.1, X toolkit)
 of Tue Jan  5 1999 on alceste
configured using 'configure  --prefix=/nfs/pkg/emacs'

I'm using above emacs program on the X-Win32 x-server running off of Win
Me on a Dell Inpiron 5000e notebook.

I'm using a logitch mouse which has a scroll wheel as the middle mouse
button.  When I scroll up with the scroll wheel, then emacs crashes with
the following statement:  'Fatal error (6).Abort'.  Scrolling down does
nothing.
