M-x grep not prepared for file names with spaces in them

Very unfortunate that M-x grep just gives 'no more hits' upon RET
when filenames have spaces in them like:
[contents of the M-x grep compile window:]
cd /d/
grep -n -e modprobe Re* *.htm* /dev/null
How to Hook up PPP in Linux.htm:560:<P>On the 2.3.9 ...
How to Hook up PPP in Linux.htm:566:<P>You may see ...
grep finished (matches found) at Mon Dec 25 07:35:44
I bet compilation-error-regexp-alist's value is at fault.
