Is this really still true, now that most people use 600DPI or better
printers?

I would think so.

Indeed, so it does.  7 columns instead of 6.  And also there is some
free space I doubt that it would be possible to fold things back into
6 columns as is.

Use dvips -t landscape

Hmm.  This is the refcard from 20.3, and unless you use a radically
modified (and therefore undoubtely renamed) tex I can not see how you
could _not_ get 7 columns...

BTW, I also consider it a bug that the refcard assumes letter instead
of A4.  Usefull in the US, no doubt, but pretty useless in much of the
rest of the world (yes, there _is_ a rest of the world).
