When the topic of utf-8 support in XFree last came up, there seemed
rather little documentation on it, which was a problem when people
wanted Emacs to use it. The situation looks the same on my Debian
testing system with XFree 4.1<something>. Doc would probably help.

I don't think there is utf-8 support in the version (3.3.6) in Debian
stable, for instance (at which I'm currently typing).

Locale support should work the same for any utf-8 coding system,
regardless of how it's defined.
