Did it? In the glibc CVS crypt/md5.c was last changed on 2001-12-14.

Such things are perfectly valid. GNU clisp has been using such things
for years. Which compilers do not support this? (Some CVS version of
gcc broke it a year ago, but the breakage was fixed after some
original ANSI C committee members tought the gcc developers how to
interpret the standard.)
