I worry that this won't work on some modern hosts if "error" is coded
as the coding standards suggest, since unsigned long long int is often
wider than a pointer.
That is a real problem if you use long long int.
Many programs don't use long long int. Does our old recommendation
have problems in other cases too?
What does it look like to use the gnulib error module?
Maybe we should recommend that, but I want to see what it
would mean before I decide.
