FYI, more on principle than anything else, but
this avoids nastiness if VPATH has a pathological value
like '`echo bad things > /etc/passwd`':
gnumakefile: Don't double-quote-expand $(VPATH) value.
* modules/gnumakefile (clean-GNUmakefile): Use single quotes.
