IIUC, Gary Vaughan's attempt to overhaul the bootstrap script would take
advantage of 'autoconf --trace' and other tools to get reliable
information.  I still feel bad that I haven't spent any review time on that.

I agree that the best way to learn what m4 will expand a macro to is to
use m4 to do the macro expansion, not sed.  It's just that it's faster
to fix a sed-script within existing framework than it is to redesign the
framework to be more powerful.
