Probably I'm crazy, but maybe gettext should simply be removed from
gnulib?  Then users could update it through the standard
gettext-provided mechanisms without any interference from gnulib, and
conversely.

I admit I've never been clear on what is gained by having gettext in
gnulib, since typically (always?) gettext files are not updated between
releases anyway.  It sure adds a lot of complexity for everyone.  -k
