Aha - I just discovered you can do this in cfg.mk:
# Update m4-latest.tar.* symlinks during 'make stable/beta'.
GNUPLOADFLAGS = --symlink-regex
without having to tweak maint.mk. Thus, it is already opt-in, as Simon
suggested.
