Follow-up Comment #1:
I've 'fixed' it by doing something sensible for non IPv4 addresses.
The IP component of GID reserves 4 byte, I'm currently filling it with the
hash of the hosts address as a string. Given the fact that many applications
have been using rfc1918 IP addresses and other components of the GID contain
timestamps and other hash values, I think we should be safe (unique) enough
for all practical purposes.
