Follow-up Comment #1:

I tried to reproduce the described behaviour, but first failed to do so. I
can get the same freezing when the option panel isn't closed but simply gets
put in the background. 

Then I realized that you could close the option panel via the window manager
close button. That way I got the described behaviour. I will be looking into
this further.
