new, stable gzip release imminent

I've just pushed a bunch of clean-up changes and one bug-fix:

If you know of any pending problems that haven't been
fixed "upstream", please let me know, by posting to this list.

If nothing comes up in the next few days, I'll release gzip-1.3.13
with something very close to today's content.
