Mach 4.0 Kernel Experience
Submitted by drhodus on Fri, 2005-10-28 17:00.

Recently spent some time getting the Mach lite kernel up and running for
research on the idea can the system be made to run in production. Initial
testing went as expected, the system was very slow. I merged a large part
of John Dyson's VM rewrite for FreeBSD into the system and performance
tripled in speed.

The messaging system is still very heavy weight and not to my liking. I'm
sure that other parts of the system are still too unstable to be a
production system, though this testing shows that Mach can produce some
production like speeds.

Where would one have to go looking for more information about the work
you've been doing?

I'm interested, since we're also still using Mach (i.e. GNU Mach, which
is based on Mach 4) to run the GNU Hurd (a replacement for ``the Unix
kernel'') on.

Regards,
 Thomas
