Follow-up Comment #1, bug #6034 (project hurd):

stderr should always be available for active translators.  At least with an
enhanced hello translator (i.e. libtrivfs) it is.

All file descriptors are closed in at least two places in libfshelp, see
`grep -i std[eo] libfshelp/*'.  stderr is manually re-enabled afterwards. 
So, it seems that active translators are only allowed to use stderr, but not
stdout.

In case you remember, where did you experience that being root or not makes a
difference?
