I like it. 

The only thing I'm not quite sure about is the last phrase, because I fear, 
that too many people could think too much about the money when applying. 

It's a major part of the GSoC, that people get paid for it, but I miss 
the "innovation" and the "for the good of society" aspect in that sentence. 

It should somehow convey the essence of the Hurd, I think (every text which 
will be read as standalone should convey this essence). 

How about this small addition? 
"to take part in lifting artificial restrictions from computer users"

        "The Hurd project has been accepted as a mentoring organisation for <a
