Does python have some modules to browse tar files?  Else I'd suggest
something for which you already have python support, so as to focus on

I don't know, whether Python has support for tar files :-) I meant writing a translator in C, because I am not aiming at writing Python bindings. I chose tar because I found sufficient (it seems to me) documentation on libtar and, what is more important, the translator I want to write will have to implement the whole fundamental functionality of a translator (sorry for the pun :-) ).

OK, I embark on doing this task. Thanks for advice!
