Ugh... Somehow I totally missed the fact that unionfs is a hurdextras
project...

Is it copyright FSF? Otherwise, it would be problematic to base anything
on it :-(

Definitely import I would say. Having more history is always a good
thing. It will allow easily moving patches between the two code bases if
necessary, for example.
