I only heard about it a few weeks ago myself -- the .xz format is indeed
pretty new, and even it's predecessor .lzma hasn't been around for long.
(Although the LZMA algorithm itself has been in use for a couple of
years in 7zip...)
My remark probably was actually a bit premature: I fear xz-utils are not
yet easily available in stable distributions; so people might have
trouble reading .xz file if you send them out...
Of course it's fine for private backups, which you only need to read
yourself :-)
