I'm trying to find out how to solve that problem now. The linux version
uses ping (from iputils) and both linux and kfrebsd are using route add
default ... (from net-tools). Neither package is available for Hurd.

BTW: How much effort is it to implement/port ping? iputils is marked as
"not for us", but I think that every system should have a ping command
(even windows do).
