FWIW I’m in favor of sticking with the documented Autoconf approach,
which is to set the version number in configure.ac.

Guile has GUILE-VERSION [0], which gathers all sorts of versioning info,
including the version number and the SONAMEs.  But here, since all we
have is the version number, I think that keeping the info in
configure.ac is fine.
