I don't really like this.  Either have all the list (but that means
having to go through the whole filesystem at least once, that's
expensive...), or do not expose passive translators.

Well, root could start a translator at any time too, and expect the
system to behave nicely. Linux for instance does prevent from mounting a
filesystem being checked.
