As I tried to make clear, the fsck was not the problem. It is whatever comes right AFTER the fsck that hung the boot. I have reason to believe that the fsck completed and that canceling it was not relevant.
Also, scanning the boot messages as they went by, I think an fsck was completed earlier in the boot. I wish I had been able to get that dmesg.
