Thanks!
I redid: https://people.debian.org/~sthibault/hurd-i386/installer/README-d-i
without changing anything.

The resulted mini.iso did go farther:

dpkg: dependenc problems prevent configuration of rsyslog:
  rsyslog depends on libjson-c3 (>= 0.10); however:
    Package libjson-c3 is not installed.
rsyslog depends on liblogging-stdlog0 (>= 1.0.2); however:
  Package liblogging-stdlog0 is not installed.
rsyslog depends on liblognorm2 (>= 1.1.2); however:
  Package liblognorm2 is not installed.

I think I reported here previously pretty much the same and you then said:
  mini.iso is fragile.

Maybe I should:
make build_cdrom_grub

I am a bit confused about:
then copy this for debian-cd, patches are available
http://people.debian.org/~sthibault/hurd-i386/installer/patch-debootstrap
http://people.debian.org/~sthibault/hurd-i386/installer/patch-debian-cd

Do I need to apply these before "make build_cdrom_grub"?

I guess I should just try without and see what will happen.
