READ FIRST (above bug reports incorrect)

Argh.  I must have done something myself.
The first time I checked out the cvs tree I didn't see the
./bootstrap script and had attempted to start it myself
by typing the usual 'aclocal', 'autoheader' etc.
Once I saw the ./bootstrap script I executed that and
assumed that it wouldn't make a difference.

It did however.  I just did a fresh checkout myself
again, this time immdeately continuing with './bootstrap'
and now everything works.
