Hi Gary,

I have tried your updated patch. It did not fit perfectly with 1.4b or the
branch-1-4 from CVS but I guess that was to be expected.

The default -g -O2 does not work for me (AIX 4.3.3 ml8, gcc
2.9-aix43-000718 from the AIX toolbox, autoconf-2.52). This has often been
a source of problems in the past. After removing the -O2 from the
generated Makefiles, the tests works fine.

Assigning the copyright to the FSF is no problem for me. I don't know the
procedure, though, I have to look at it.
